With technology paving the way for instruction on a daily basis, there is a strong sense of urgency related to Digital Citizenship education. Join Hayfield Secondary Technology Coaches to hear how the Common Sense Education Digital Citizenship lessons were integrated into subject area content in ways that were meaningful and not “extra.” Prior to any lessons being taught, the needs of the school were assessed through interviews with all stakeholders, gauging the needs and prior knowledge of digital citizenship. After needs were assessed, the school offered professional development to teachers and then collaborated with them to use the Common Sense digital citizenship curriculum. Together, coaches and teachers found curricular ties that made lessons more meaningful for students. The digital citizenship curriculum helped open a conversation for teachers, students, and parents that left everyone feeling better equipped for a 1:1 rollout throughout the school. As a school, Hayfield was able to earn Common Sense recognition for their work in Digital Citizenship education and is continuing that work in the 2019-2020 school year. Participants in this session will learn how to identify themes within lessons and be better equipped to identify ways to embed them into their subject area content.
