Growing Real Writers: Using Technology to Emphasis Process and Authentic Writing Experiences

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

As English teachers and Instructional Technology Resource Teachers, we have committed to learning how to facilitate writing using technology and taking advantage of our division's 1:1 adoption. Using technology in our work with secondary teachers and in our own, non-traditional English class has taught us the power of process over product, of authentic writing experiences, and of student choice. By moving beyond traditional assignments to embrace writing that allows students to find and cultivate their unique voices, teachers can use technology as a positive force for student creation.

In this session, participants will discover ways to focus on creating authentic writing opportunities for students, ideas for daily writing, and concrete strategies to emphasize process over product through technology. We will highlight technology tools, including Google Apps for Education, Nearpod, Adobe Spark, WriteReader, podcast platforms, and StoryboardThat. We will offer practical ideas for teachers to motivate writers, encourage creativity, and manage revision and feedback. By considering the principles of backward design, teachers can place these new tools, skills, and strategies in the context of their overall writing goals for students as writers. At the conclusion of this session, participants will leave with a brighter vision of how to grow real writers in a technology-rich world.]
