Just-in-time professional support is an effective method for improving teacher performance. ITRTs in Virginia support innovation within our schools best when working collaboratively with teachers. In Goochland, we have undertaken an action research process to help improve the collaborative role of the instructional technology coach, deepen the understanding of teachers and building administrators for how to design for deeper learning, and build reflection into professional practice. We have undertaken this model in four of our schools, targeting a willing group of teachers and their principals on this journey. We’ll share the protocol we use to develop an individualized depth score for learning, and how this metric was used across a number of different classroom observations.

By tracking learning depth index scores over time, teachers and coaches both can reflect upon the elements of their lessons that contributed to deeper learning. The feedback loops to both coaches and teachers are supportive and constructive—not evaluative. Details of our depth of learning instrument, which we call Pathways Toward Deeper Learning, will be shared with participants.

This session is ideally suited for open-minded teachers, growth-minded technology coaches, and school administrators who want to maximize learning in their school. Our team has undertaken this action research at the elementary and middle school levels. We hope to provide enough information about our project so that it can be replicated at the elementary, middle, or high school levels. This session is device-agnostic.
